Resource Center: What Is An E-Loo?

A Cost Effective Green Solution!

The latest development in outdoor toilet technology, the Enviro Loo - also called the E-Loo - is a non-discharge dry sanitation system that can be used as an alternative to a dry toilet or vault toilet in the outdoors.

The E-Loo, manufactured by Clean-up America, is not a composting toilet as other outdoor toilets are. Installed and operational in only one day, the E-Loo can be used in virtually any outdoor setting and are commonly placed at hunting camps, parks, schools, fishing cabins, public building, outdoor arenas and fairgrounds and anywhere else that needs to offer a toilet without access to running water. The E-Loo is friendly to the environment - hence its name - as it does not contaminate ground water.

Solid and liquid waste are separated by the E-Loo system as it enters the ceramic toilet bowl. Liquid waste simply drains to the bottom of the container and solids remain on a drying plate. Both the solids and liquids are continually exposed to air that is pushed through the E-Loo by a forced aeration ventilation system.

As the air moves through the E-Loo system, solid waste is dehydrated as it moves across the ridged, perforated drying plate. The air movement causes the liquid waste to evaporate as well. While this process works, sunlight is absorbed by the black cover and increases the temperature within the collection container. The heat and oxygen-rich air cause the waste to decompose.

This process converts the waste in the E-Loo into a dry, stabilized material that is odor free and approximately 5 percent of the original volume.

For more information on the E-Loo system, contact the experts at Soils and Environmental Services, which serves all of the Northern Virginia metro area.
